Business View Oceania interviews Steve Lyon, Managing Director at Lyon Technics, for our Technology View.

A family owned and operated business with over four decades of experience under its belt, the team at Lyon Technics have provided top-tier electrical services to residential, commercial, and industrial clients since their 1977 establishment in Sydney, Australia. Founder David Lyon established the company as a sole trader operation that focussed largely on the domestic sector; now a team of six to ten, Lyon Technics specialises in electrical maintenance and installation for commercial and industrial facilities across Australia’s Sydney Metro, Central Coast and Newcastle.

Lyon Technics supports commercial, industrial, and high-end residential clients. When undertaking commercial work, the company prioritises efficiency and safety to streamline business operations and ensure full electrical compliance. Lyon Technics takes on commercial and industrial clients of all shapes and sizes, offering expertise in general electrical maintenance, switchboard maintenance and installations including generator power, transfer switching and energy management, general power and lighting including energy efficient LED lighting,  exit and emergency lighting, RCD testing, testing and tagging, switchboard thermographic inspections, solar systems, FTA cable, and satellite connection, fibre optic and data cabling, uninterrupted power supplies (UPS), surge and lightning protection, telephone systems and complete systems for access control, CCTV, intercom, security.

Steve Lyon took over his father’s role as Managing Director of Lyon Technics in 1997. “My introduction to the business was in a time of massive growth. I brought in my own network from other areas of the industry thanks to my background in electrical project and team management, so we did a lot of work in the commercial construction sector. During those times we had a team of 30 plus for projects like schools, hospitals, and the like, but my father and I quickly realised that continuing commercial and industrial maintenance work was a niche we did very well in. So we moved back into a leaner business model, and have since maintained great relationships with stakeholders in that market.” Long-term commercial clients have included major players such as Mirvac Real Estate, anglican schools, and localised shopping centres, marinas, hospitals, aged care facilities, commercial and corporate high-rise sites, and industrial parks.

Combining those two areas of expertise has been fantastic for us- we have formed some really solid relationships with industry players and associates that essentially allow us to offer a complete service, even for new builds, through our network. So if there’s something we don’t offer, chances are we have a partnership with a company that does and we can refer our client directly. It’s also an opportunity to commit many minds to one goal, should there be an issue, idea, or trend that affects us across sectors.”

The company has also invested significantly into technology systems that boost time management, efficiency, and accuracy on the job and in the office. From job management, WHS and accounting software such as AroFlo, MYOSH and Xero to mobile vehicle GPS tracking, Lyon Technics makes use of every opportunity to streamline their processes. Field technicians are supported with remote access to cloud operations, allowing for more efficient job allocation, purchasing, and invoicing, along with client assets management and preventative maintenance programs. Technicians are also able to provide quotes in a competitive timeframe- under 24 hours, Mr. Lyon says, depending on the size and complexity of the project. Lyon Technics would like to acknowledge their industry partners and suppliers, particularly in the technology space, for their ongoing support of innovation in the electrical services sector. The company also wishes to recognise their ongoing project development and maintenance relationships with Sydney’s Roseville College and Mirvac Real-estate, and client relationships through BNI, some of which have spanned upwards of two decades.

Moving forward, Lyon Technics plans to extend their reach into New South Wales by introducing a second office on the Central Coast with a localised branch manager and filed technician team.
