Founded in 2012 by Managing Director Darren Price, Westbury Constructions has grown from a small, three-person operation into a dynamic force in New South Wales’ construction landscape. With over 50 staff, a growing portfolio of civic infrastructure, and a reputation for reliability and integrity, the company continues to shape the future of Australian communities, one purposeful project at a time. FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO $70M FORECAST When Westbury Constructions first opened its doors, the team focused on maintenance and small-scale projects for local councils.“It was just myself, my stepson Luke, and an accountant who’s no longer involved,” says Price. “We started with nothing. Now we have 50 employees, offices in Newcastle and Sydney, and projects across all of New South Wales.” NE PROJECT AT A TIME MMUNITY WITH D IMPACT 2 BUSINESS VIEW OCEANIA VOLUME 07, ISSUE 08

The company has evolved to deliver an array of projects from specialist disability housing and Indigenous accommodation to aquatic centers, libraries, and sporting facilities. Westbury also operates a Building Services division that handles refurbishments and small-scale maintenance work, an increasingly essential part of their offering. The scale of their growth is impressive: turnover reached $50 million last year, and is projected to hit $70 million in the current financial year. HIGH-IMPACT PROJECTS WITH A COMMUNITY FOCUS Among Westbury’s many noteworthy projects, Price highlights the Galston Pool Aquatic Centre as a recent standout. “We demolished and rebuilt the entire aquatic center, preserving the original pool structure. It’s a great example of our capability in handling complex community infrastructure,” he explains. Upcoming completions include major builds like the grandstand and function center for Muswellbrook Race Club, and the Mark Taylor Grandstand in Waitara. These are in addition to a steady stream of projects that support the company’s dual focus on social housing and civic development. A CULTURE OF COLLABORATION AND AUTHENTICITY Westbury’s growth is not just measured by numbers, but also by its culture. “We’re not clock-watchers. Everyone is accountable and collaborative,” says Price.“People are encouraged to walk into anyone’s office and titles don’t matter here.” This ethos also extends to how Westbury engages with clients and subcontractors.“We’ve always tried to be a builder that says, ‘Here’s the problem, here’s the solution,’ not,‘We need more money.’That attitude has built strong, long-term relationships with clients and suppliers.” Westbury works with more than 1,000 suppliers and subcontractors, the majority of whom are repeat collaborators. This consistency supports their high standards and customer-focused reputation. 3 BUSINESS VIEW OCEANIA VOLUME 07, ISSUE 08 WESTBURY CONSTRUCTIONS

NAVIGATING INDUSTRY SHIFTS WITH INTEGRITY The construction industry has seen dramatic shifts in recent years from pandemic disruptions to surging material and labor costs. Price notes that many current projects face a budget shortfall, particularly those that were planned years ago. “What we’re seeing now is a shift toward designfinalization tenders. We’ll get partial drawings and be asked to help bring a project within budget,” he explains. While it’s challenging, Westbury’s collaborative and transparent approach has positioned them as a trusted partner in this evolving environment. As affordability decreases and expectations rise, Darren Price advocates for a stronger focus on value over lowest price.“It’s frustrating when we lose a bid to a builder with lesser capacity and then get asked to fix their mistakes. We pride ourselves on doing it right the first time.” 5 BUSINESS VIEW OCEANIA VOLUME 07, ISSUE 08 WESTBURY CONSTRUCTIONS

COMPLIANCE, ACCREDITATION, AND STANDING OUT In a regulatory environment that’s tightening across Australia, particularly in New South Wales, Westbury has positioned itself ahead of the curve. The company holds ISO certifications in quality, safety, and environmental management, and recently secured Federal Safety Commissioner (FSC) accreditation. “In New South Wales, licensing used to be inconsistent. Now it’s aligning with the rest of the country, and we welcome that,” says Price.“We have multiple licensed builders on staff, which really sets us apart.” National licensing is on the horizon, and Westbury is already prepared. TECHNOLOGY, TOOLS, AND THE FUTURE Despite his decades of experience, Price remains humble and adaptive.“You never stop learning in this industry,” he says.“Technology, from quoting software to social media, has transformed everything. We’ve embraced that.” Westbury is currently overhauling its digital presence to better connect with clients and showcase its work. Internally, cloud-based tools and digital collaboration have streamlined workflows and improved efficiency across the business. Looking forward, Westbury is evaluating whether to enter the multi-storey vertical construction space, particularly for social housing, where density is increasingly required in urban centers. “We’ve resisted going vertical so far, but we’re starting to price projects at three and four stories,” Price notes. “It may be the next step for us.” 8 BUSINESS VIEW OCEANIA VOLUME 07, ISSUE 08
