With traditional holidays including Ramadan, Hanshi Festival, Easter, and Passover, alongside modern days of significance such as Earth Day and ANZAC Day, and more non- traditional celebrations like Sourbread Day, April Fools Day, and No Housework Day, April represents a plethora of themes and representations for people from all walks of life. Did you know? Ramadan is observed by individuals of the Muslim faith around the world from the beginning of April to the beginning of May, as a month of fasting that promotes prayer, reflection, and the acknowledgment and support of community. Hanshi Festival, AKA the Cold Food Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday with a history of over 2,500 years. The Festival commemorates ancestors through memorial ceremonies and grave maintenance carried out by participants across East Asia. Easter is a Christian Holiday that traditionally celebrates the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion. The modern world, however, practices widespread adoption of Easter as a non-religious holiday that brings families together to eat, play games, and enjoy each other’s company. Passover is a celebration of the Hebrews’ liberation from slavery and ‘passing over’ their oppressors into safety. It is generally held from the 15th to the 21st of March or April, upholds strict laws regarding food and work, and is seen as a time of great rejoice for those practicing Judaism. Whether you observe a traditional religious holiday or are more inclined towards the promise of an April Fools joke and time away from housework, April has something for you!
