It’s a common denominator and key emphasis of every conversation I have with community and company executives throughout Oceania. Those daily interviews are my favourite part of this job – truly enlightening and never a dull moment. Each and every person is keen to share what makes their business or city/town/shire special and successful. Inevitably, the emphasis comes around to highlighting the people in their circle. The valuable customers they serve. The supplier and partner relationships that sustain them and help them grow. And, almost always, the discussion ends with something along the line of “We wouldn’t be where we are without our own amazing team.” These aren’t empty words… I hear the heartfelt sincerity in the voice. Which is sometimes a surprise, when the person I’m speaking with has been very matter-of-fact and ‘all business’ during the call. It comes through loud and clear that every member of their team plays a key role in keeping things alive and moving forward. Acknowledging that doesn’t have to cost a penny. A simple kind word or gesture, asking how they’re doing – and actually listening – can mean more than you know. And a big thank you that comes with a smile is always welcome, even on Zoom! This month’s edition of Business View Oceania features an in- depth report on the facilities management industry in New Zealand, which represents 1.4 percent of GDP (approximately $2.8 billion), a significant portion of the country’s economy. According to FMANZ, the Facilities Management Association of New Zealand, 2021 is shaping up to be another busy and productive year. One project of note: their new cadetship programme combining practical on-the-job work experience with part-time study –“great news for young people interested in gaining a real understanding of facilities management and making FM their career of choice.” We also bring exciting news from the Prefab Wood Construction sector with a strong new addition to the NZ offsite timber manufacturing scene. Backed by two decades of parent company experience in Switzerland, Hector Egger New Zealand proudly announces its state-of-the-art facility is now open for business in Cromwell. The firm specialises in the manufacture of high-tech timber structure components and prefabricated timber panels for NZ residential and commercial building construction. Then for a change of scenery, we travel to Tasmania, where the beautiful coastal City of Devonport is evolving into a sought-after place of growth and long-term prosperity. A visionary plan known as ‘LIVING CITY’ is spurring that success – aiming to build on Devonport’s many strategic advantages and transform the region by creating opportunities in the tourism, hospitality, arts and culture, retail and services sectors. At this point, I’d like to give a shout-out to my own super amazing team. This great publication you love to read doesn’t produce itself. It takes a big group effort from talented individuals working behind the scenes to create Business View Oceania every month. Cheers from a grateful EIC!
