BUSINESS VIEW OCEANIA VOLUME 4, ISSUE 11 BUSINESS VIEW OCEANIA VOLUME 4, ISSUE 11 5 4 V alues are a set of principles that guide and govern who we are and who we must be. Great companies (both large and small) have a soul and values bring it to life through language; they articulate our essence in a way that would otherwise remain unspoken. Why is it so important to build a business that aligns with your core values? Values are not just a set of principles that are manufactured to engineer productivity or loyalty, they are an authentic representation of the true heartbeat of an organisation and reflect your business’s core identity. By defining our business’s values, we not only provide a roadmap for our team to follow; we also develop our unique brand identity and set ourselves apart from our competitors. To build a business that aligns with your values, you first must answer the genuine questions of ‘Who are we?’ and ‘Who do we strive to be?’ To drill down even further, I’ve provided a list of questions below that can help you find your core values: • What is the unique culture and DNA of your company? • When you look at your top people, those you would love more of, what attitudes, communication styles and behaviours do they consistently demonstrate that you want to encourage? • When someone is not culturally aligned, what attitudes, communication styles and behaviours do they consistently demonstrate that you want to eliminate? JACK DELOSA OUTLINES: ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND HOW TO BUILD A BUSINESS THAT ALIGNS WITH YOUR VALUES O p e n i n g L i n e s About the author: Jack Delosa is an entrepreneur and the founder of Australia’s largest business coaching and training provider, The Entourage , which has a community of over 650,000 members. Since 2010, The Entourage has helped their members add over $2 billion in value to their businesses. Under his leadership, The Entourage has been awarded the 4th Best Place to Work in Australia, and the Top 50 in Australasia, by Best Places To Work. The Entourage is the country’s most-recognised brand when it comes to paving the path forward for high-growth entrepreneurs. Along the way, Jack also became an investor, investing into companies spanning biotechnology, luxury real estate, finance, ecommerce, food retail, recruitment and even aviation, including one company that became what’s known in Silicon Valley as a ‘unicorn’; a business that goes from $0 to $1 billion within ten years. To build a business that aligns with your values, you first must answer the genuine questions of ‘Who are we?’ and ‘Who do we strive to be?’ • Are there any aspects of your ideal culture that you would like to see demonstrated but don’t yet exist? What attitudes, communication styles or behaviours would boost performance further? • In cascading order, what values do you consider the most important to least important? Within an organisation, great culture comes not just from having a set of core values, but from the whole team acting in alignment with those values. The organisations that firmly know who they are and what they stand for and can communicate this time and time again to their customers, will ultimately stand out in a crowded marketplace and set themselves up for enduring success.
