1 2 BUSINESS VIEW OCEANIA VOLUME 4, ISSUE 10 BUSINESS VIEW OCEANIA VOLUME 4, ISSUE 10 EDI TOR ’ S NOTES As we make our way into Oceania’s busiest holiday season, let’s take a brief look at what’s happening around the region in domestic tourism and the government sectors supporting its continued growth. Tourism Australia has announced their latest ambassador for the global campaign “Come and Say G’Day”- Ruby the Roo, the cartoon kangaroo! Ruby was unveiled in early October via a digital billboard in Tokyo, Japan, and she plans to travel the world over the coming months to showcase everything Australia has to offer. This new push will complement previous and ongoing campaigns designed to supplement Australia’s tourism industry, which lost upwards of $40 billion thanks to the global COVID-19 pandemic. In Papua New Guinea, Parliament has honoured the late Wewak MP, Hon. Kevin Isifu, with an official informing of the House regarding his September 13th passing, and a show of respect through members’ risen minute of silence. Present members also remembered Sir Peter Barter and Mr. Peter Utu Oresi, who both passed away this year. New Zealand’s Gore District has announced their new mayor, Mr. Ben Bell- the nation’s youngest elected to date at just 23 years old. Taking the title by eight votes, Mr. Bell extended his joy and gratitude to the Gore community. “I am extremely humbled to be elected Mayor of Gore, a vibrant district with so much to offer its locals and those who visit here.” Finally, Tahiti, French Polynesia, has been announced as the official surf competition host for the Paris 2024 Olympic games. Despite being over 15,000km away from Paris itself, the tiny surfing village of Teahupo’o is set to host Olympic surfers looking to hit that perfect score on the famous Teahupo’o wave, nicknamed ‘Chopes’. The wave is said to be the ultimate test for expert surfers’ ability to ride a barrel.
