Steering the Maritime Industry Forward

Navigating a strong future with the expertise to anchor success

Founded in 1991, The MCC Group has grown into one of the most reputable entities in the maritime industry. It provides a wide range of specialized services, including marine surveying, insurance assessment, cargo inspections, loading and discharge of vessels.

Headquartered in Brisbane, Queensland, the company has established a strong domestic and international presence, serving clients across shipping, insurance, and government sectors. Roger Weiller, CEO & Managing Director, brings extensive experience and a compelling personal journey that reflects the company’s dedication to resilience and innovation.

A multifaceted maritime leader

The MCC Group comprises four distinct companies, each specializing in a different area of the maritime industry. MCC Marine is the foundation upon which The MCC Group was built, providing traditional marine surveying and compliance services across the maritime sector. The company specializes in vessel surveys, safety inspections, regulatory compliance, and risk management, ensuring that vessels and cargo meet industry standards. With a focus on accuracy and efficiency, MCC Marine has established itself as a trusted partner for shipping companies, insurers, regulatory bodies, shippers, terminals and receivers.

“MCC Marine handles all traditional marine surveying, technical staff when it comes to vessel survey safety inspections, compliance, and risk management,” Weiller explains. As well as, lashing surveys, draft surveys, and quantity and quality control. The marine surveying game is a volumes game—the margins are tight, so it’s got to be very well managed.”

The company’s services extend beyond traditional inspections, including expert evaluations on cargo conditions, load stability, and environmental considerations. Marine surveying is an essential component of global trade, and MCC Marine plays a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of port operations.

With increasing regulations governing international shipping, the company has expanded its capabilities to help clients navigate complex compliance requirements, minimize risks, and ensure smooth operations. MCC Marine’s commitment to quality and precision continues to drive its growth and solidify its position as a leader in the industry.

Marine Cargo Care

Marine Cargo Care serves as the operational powerhouse of The MCC Group, specializing in loading and discharging bulk cargo across various Australian ports. The company has earned its reputation as the leading entity within the group by ensuring the seamless movement of essential commodities such as grain, cement, fertiliser, amongst others. With a highly trained workforce and advanced logistical strategies, Marine Cargo Care facilitates efficient, timely, and secure handling of cargo, meeting the stringent requirements of the global shipping industry.

This company has become the largest entity in the group, “Anything that comes into Australia or out of Australia in bulk will have some sort of involvement from us,” Weiller states. “We also serve as loadmasters on coal vessels and handle cargo hold preparation, terminal assistance, and workforce solutions.”

Maritime Surveys and Claims

Maritime Surveys and Claims is a critical component of The MCC Group’s service portfolio, operating primarily out of Southeast Asia. The company provides specialized risk management, protection, and compliance services to ensure that international vessels meet stringent Australian maritime regulations before entering its waters. With Australia’s strict port laws and heavily regulated shipping industry, this division is key in preventing operational and financial setbacks for global shipping companies.

“Maritime Surveys and Claims operates out of Southeast Asia, providing risk management, protection, and compliance services to clients before they enter Australian waters and ports,” Weiller says. “Regulations here are strict, and the consequences can be swift and severe for international players who come in unprepared. We help them navigate these challenges effectively.”

The company works closely with international shipping operators, offering pre-arrival audits, vessel inspections, and compliance assessments to mitigate potential regulatory penalties. By proactively addressing issues before they arise, Maritime Surveys and Claims ensures seamless entry into Australian ports, reducing costly delays and avoiding fines. Beyond compliance, the division also assists in insurance risk assessments, environmental protection strategies, and contingency planning for emergency response situations. As global trade expands, the company is set to strengthen its presence in the region, helping international clients navigate the complexities of Australian maritime laws with confidence and efficiency.

MCC Biosecurity Services

The fourth company in the group, MCC Biosecurity Services, focuses on industry-authorized officers operating under Australia’s Export Act. “The government released certain scopes of work to private industry, and we represent the department (DAFF) or work on their behalf in a sense, protecting Australia’s reputation with its trading partners” Weiller explains. “We set up this company to fill a gap in the market, and now it’s inundated with demand – A difficult business to run, expensive and heavily regulated.”

Innovating with JobKeeper

The MCC Group has developed an advanced in-house system called JobKeeper to support its complex operations across multiple locations, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and workforce management. “We started developing the JobKeeper system about four years ago,” Weiller explains. “It was fine-tuned through COVID, and that’s where the name comes from—it kept us alive, just like the government’s JobKeeper program did for Australia, helping us maintain stability and continuity during uncertain times.”

The JobKeeper system is a custom-built platform designed to seamlessly manage job numbers, ship names and schedules, personnel assignments, timesheets, and sales records across all company locations. The system enhances operational efficiency while reducing administrative burdens by centralizing these critical functions. “Each office runs independently and autonomously,” Weiller notes. “They don’t rely on a head office system to do everything. Instead, the platform generates job numbers, assigns personnel, tracks working hours, and manages compliance in real time, providing full transparency across our entire operation.”

Beyond operational logistics, JobKeeper also serves as a comprehensive employee management system, ensuring that workforce needs are met efficiently and proactively. “It handles everything from uniform orders to compliance safety checks and license renewals,” Weiller explains. “If someone’s license is about to expire, the system sends an automatic alert to them and their manager, preventing delays and keeping everyone up to date with industry regulations.”

Fatigue management is another critical component of JobKeeper, playing a vital role in protecting employee well-being and ensuring compliance with workplace safety standards. “It sends us alerts when someone has reached a certain number of hours in a week,” Weiller says. “If we click into a job happening anywhere in Australia, we can see exactly who is working, how many hours they’ve completed, and whether they are approaching fatigue limits. This allows us to take proactive measures, redistribute workloads, and prioritize safety without disrupting operations.”

Confidence in the future

Looking ahead, Weiller is confident in the company’s trajectory. “Sky’s the limit for us,” he says. “We have a leadership team of four people whom I trust very much, including my new CFO and General Counsel, previously head of legal at a major bank in Hong Kong and strong ties with national accounting firm. He was my private advisor for three years before joining us. My GM was a friend for 10 years before coming on board, and another GM has been with us for two years now as we develop strong lifelong relationships. The reason I mention this is because I’m nothing without them. They need to know that, and I’m very vocal about it.”

The MCC Group is preparing for significant industry changes and closely monitoring regulatory shifts. “We have a federal election coming up, and depending on how that goes, we’ll adjust accordingly,” Weiller notes. “But regardless of external factors, we will keep pushing forward.”

A key aspect of the company’s long-term growth strategy is, slow but sure expansion model. “We don’t just send one person to a location, hand them a diary, and let them figure things out,” he explains. “We build a proper office, set up a structured team, and ensure everything is done right. That’s why our growth is slow, but it’s stable – Supported by our head office team”

Adapting to global trade shifts

In January of last year, Weiller launched a five-year strategic plan, which includes expanding to several new locations across Australia and establishing a hub in Singapore. “I just returned from Singapore and Hong Kong, where we visited about 30 clients in six days,” he shares. “The Singapore hub will act as a technical center for our Southeast Asian clients, distributing work to Australia based on shipping routes and client needs.”

The company is also positioning itself to enter new markets and introduce specialized services, with an eye on potential international partnerships. “We’re focused on ensuring that every step we take is strategic and sustainable,” Weiller adds. “Major shifts are happening in global trade, and we intend to be a key player in facilitating efficient and compliant maritime operations.”

“In this business, it’s not just about what you do—it’s about how you do it,” Weiller says. “And for us, that means staying true to our principles, pushing boundaries, and striving to improve.”
