exploded to unprecedented levels with
the number of connected devices far
exceeding the world’s population. The
most frequent comments in the Coun-
cil’s guest books have consistently
been about better mobile phone cov-
erage which is just another testament
to the importance
of such an endeav-
or.
Providing good
coverage for mo-
bile and internet
networks is vital in
this day and age
across every as-
pect. On an indi-
vidual level, there
are loads of people
who wish to work from home, access
education services, and become con-
nected for social and entertainment
purposes. On a business level, modern
enterprises are required to have an In-
ternet presence vital for fast commu-
nication, administration, and finance.
On the public services level, hospitals,
schools, libraries, and various oth-
er utilities absolutely have a need for
fast and stable Internet connections
as well.
Planning ahead
As is the case with many other small
councils, the Barcoo Shire Council has
to establish plans decades into the
future. Though the road network will
take a considerable amount of its time
and resources, the Council also looks
in other areas for improvements too.
Sustainability, for instance, is a big con-
cern. When they first started regulat-
ing water supplies, they Council quickly
looked at the cost of producing water.
Once the first water treatment plants
were established, they also quickly re-
alized that the cost
of treating all of the
water was highly
ineffective. As a re-
sult, they now only
treat about 20 per-
cent of the water
which makes peo-
ple use it much
more efficiently
while cutting down
on costs.
Overall, the Barcoo Shire Council
should take pride in being so active-
ly involved in the community and re-
sponding to their needs in as quick
and efficient a manner as possible.
Though their work is challenging, they
have risen to the occasion more than
once and the community has directly
benefitted as a result. The shire might
seem small in comparison to others in
the surrounding region but its econom-
ic and social impact is considerable in-
deed.
