18 Business View Australia - June 2015

largest engineering project

ever under taken in Australia.

Seen by many as a def ining

moment in the histor y Austra-

lia, the scheme was designed

to collect the water that comes

from the Snowy Mountains and

store i t in dams. The project in-

cluded 225 kilometres of, pipe -

lines, tunnels and aqueducts

and the scheme now provides

up ten percent of the electrici t y

supply to New South Wales as

providing vi tal water supplies

to inland farms and industr y.

The Nor th Strathield

Rai l Underpass

The Nor th Strathf ield Rail un-

derpass, par t of the Nor th-

ern Sydney Freight Corridor

project , is an example of how

engineering ingenui t y over-

came the growing demands

on a busy transpor t network.

Consul t ing engineers devised a

means to construct a 148m long

freight rail tunnel, underneath

an exist ing busy suburban rail

line. Their innovat ive design, cut

the construct ion t ime from an

est imated three to f ive years to

just 8 months and, wi th no dis-

rupt ion to normal rail ser vices.

ASA Hot Fire Training

Faci l i ty, Melbourne

A great example of the

mul t i - disciplined nature of the

work of a modern consul t ing

engineering f irm is the state

of the ar t hot f ire training fa-

cili t y at Melbourne Airpor t .

The only facili t y of i ts kind in

Australia, the project called on

the skills of mechanical, struc -

tural, electrical, hydraulic and

civil engineers as well as envi -

ronmental exper ts too. Not only

does the design cater for the

training needs of Australia’s civil

aviat ion f ire f ighters, i t also en-

sures that waste water from the

facili t y is treated and re - cycled.

Green Square Urban

Renewal water man-

agement , Sydney

From the grand, large scale

projects such as The Snowy

Mountains Hydro -Electric

Scheme, which catch the pub -

lic’s imaginat ion, to one of the

slight ly less glamorous neces-

si t ies of modern li fe, storm wa-

ter and sewage management .

Consul t ing engineers developed

a strategy for storm water man-

agement in the Green Square

Urban Renewal area, which is lo -

cated between the busy Sydney
