Australia’s native forests extend

over 125 million hectares and wood

production in public multiple-use for-

ests is restricted to only 5.5 million

hectares or 4.5% of the total forest-

ed area. Of this, less than 80,000

hectares is harvested annually, rep-

resenting just 0.06% of the total for-

est area.

The area under plantation forests in

the country is about two million hec-

tares and represents only 1.3% of the

total forested area. But it provides 80%

of total industrial roundwood or about

19.2 million cubic metres of logs.
