Agriculture, important in many aspects of our lives, has been a part of humankind since our very early days. Since then, it has grown into one of the world’s most important industries. In Australia, it provides the vast majority of produce, contributes significantly to exports, and employs a huge number of people, particularly in rural communities. However, for the industry to keep moving forward, companies like Ausplow Farming Systems are absolutely essential.
Ausplow was established by John Ryan AM, a mechanical engineer who has designed numerous machines now used throughout Australia. His family has a long history with agriculture as his uncle was Percival Yeomans whose work has been adapted worldwide. John Ryan AM himself founded the company with the vision of constant innovation which would allow farmers to create better produce with less effort, for the environment to be as safe from hazards as possible, and for everyone involved in agriculture to find the industry more accessible than ever.
Today, the company provides a wide range of products including the Deep Blade System Auseeder, the Multistream airseeder, the Easitill II precision deep tillage machine, and the specialized Ausplow airseeders. The company provides an incredible number of different configurations for each of their models, allowing farmers to find the exact piece of equipment that fits their needs. Furthermore, extremely detailed documentation concerning the inner workings of each machine is freely available for every customer so that they can fully comprehend how each machine can be utilized.
Addressing the needs of the industry
Chris Farmer, Ausplow’s General Manager, talked to us about the company’s philosophy and levels of operations. Importantly, John Ryan AM himself is still very much involved in the farming community. He listens to their concerns, addresses their issues, and frequently visits farms in order to get a close look at the state of the industry. The company’s machines keep changing over time, adapting to the needs of the market whenever necessary. Throughout its history, Ausplow has been deeply involved in research and development, often with the indirect involvement of customers, as it relies and reacts on the feedback of farm owners. There is a great focus in adaptation and innovation as the market requires a little bit of both at all times.
“If you look at the current and previous designs, right back to day one, they are not actually dissimilar at first glance. But there is a number of subtle changes in the background to make the machines more durable and reliable while they also take into account some of the challenges that we’ve had with different conditions throughout the country. But the fundamental operation has not really changed since that time. Essentially, we stick to what works well but make enhancements to make sure that the machines work better across all conditions”, explains Chris.
Maintaining a good relationship with farmers
The agricultural industry is a fairly niche market for companies like Ausplow and, as such, they often work closely with their customers. Even though Ausplow has a network of dealers who distribute their machines to the farm owners, they are still very much involved in the community. People from the factory meet with farmers regularly, particularly new owners, and they try to keep close contact with every one of them. The company maintains a prideful profile and people wish to get in the family of the Ausplow brand as Chris and his team try to maintain an intimate relationship with the farm owners.
This is one of the things that sets Ausplow apart from other companies in the industry. The involvement in the community is up-close and personal as they wish to stay at the forefront of the industry. To that end, they also participate in 9 major Field Day events throughout Australia while they also maintain an international presence. Their products have been sold in many different countries while people from Ausplow have also attended events in South Africa and Germany for Field Days and celebrations of manufacturing excellence respectively.
International markets and further expansion
Ausplow is always open to further expansion which may encompass anything from a stronger position in international sales to expanding their reach in Australia. The company’s current growth largely comes from expanding their market share, after all. It is important to note that their machines have great resale value and fantastic build quality which means that almost none of them have been retired. The company’s current business directly stems from their old one and their great reputation is a big factor too. Furthermore, Ausplow makes sure that everything is backwards compatible so that farm owners can rest easy knowing that these machines will retain their value in the future.
With an eye towards the future, Chris believes that Ausplow should continue the development of great products with a strong focus on remaining competitive and relevant in the market. They already spend a lot in the marketing and development of new products which is one of the main reasons why they have remained at the forefront. Other than that, Ausplow have their eyes on other markets, particularly the emerging market of Africa as well as other regions. As long as they keep innovating and moving forward, Ausplow will certainly continue to serve the greater industry of agriculture in the whole of Australia.
